Postponed Flower Mart Returns in September

For the first time in modern FlowerMart history, Baltimore's rite of spring is being held in September--a historic event.  The activities originally planned for May 1 and 2 will now occur on September 11 and 12.  .

A few of the vendors who signed up for May had

conflicting shows in September and cannot participate,

but most have agreed to come to Mt. Vernon Square for

the festival.  In addition, new vendors are taking advantage of this unexpected opportunity.  (If you are a vendor and want to participate, download our contract from www.flowermart.org.) . All of the contests that were originally scheduled to take place in May will take place in September.  The Hilda Mae Snoops Art Contest winners were selected before the postponement and the artists have received their winnings, courtesy of 1st Mariner Bank.

Because sunset occurs significantly earlier in September than May, the Mart will end at 7PM both days. However, the Monument will be available to the public in September, having been closed for several years, renovated and opened on July 4.  MVPC has installed several exhibits inside.  And make sure you're in shape to climb the 227 steps to the top for some great city views.

In September, we will have a full slate of interesting entertainment on two stages.  This year, Gene Vincentt will bring his Cadillac Cruisers to the William Donald Schaefer stage on Saturday afternoon. Larry Stevens' 2015 t-shirts and FlowerMart cookbooks will be for sale at the FlowerMart Shoppe.  A FlowerMart cookbook would make a great gift for the holidays as would unique and lovely items from our vendors.

Our thanks to the Mt Vernon Place Conservancy (MVPC) for allowing FlowerMart to hang two sets of postponement signs on the construction barrier.

So join us for this historic event, have some fun, nosh a little (lemon peppermint sticks and other luscious treats will be offered) and do some shopping.  Then we'll see you again for FlowerMart 2016 on May 6 and 7.

Residential Parking Permit Renewal

Residential Parking Permit Renewal process  begins on-line on August 20th.  Current permits expire on September 30. This year, Area 28 will be one of the early users of the new on-line parking management system by IParq.  The new system, 3 years in development, offers a vastly improved user interface and a shopping cart that can handle all purchases by an applicant at one time.

Please note that only renewals can be done on-line.  Your user id and password should be the same as it was last year, but if you forgot your password, use the “forgotten password” option to obtain a new password.   For those of you wishing to apply for a new permit, you must visit the offices of the Parking Authority at 200 W Lombard Street. Google “Parking Authority, Baltimore Md” and connect to their website for more information.  They can also be reached at 443-573-2800.

This year, MVBA will be offering 4 pick-up sessions, all located at the Belvedere Condominiums, lobby level.  Our thanks to the Belvedere & Co for providing space for renewals and be sure to visit the Owl Bar for great drink and food, as well as the 13th floor, where one can now schedule catered events.

Liquor Happenings

On Thursday, August 27, at the Liquor Board, there are two applications from Mount Vernon on the hearing docket.  Hearings take place at City Hall, Room 215, beginning at 1pm.

The first hearing is for an application by Dooby’s to seek permission for live entertainment, outdoor table service, and off-premise catering.  MVBA has historically not objected to outdoor table service or off-premise catering permits.  However, live entertainment always raises a concern,  Fortunately, in discussions with Phil Han of Dooby’s, they are willing to agree to MVBA’s usual request for sunsetting the live entertainment privilege when the venue is sold or transferred to another entity.  It is the café’s desire to be able to provide limited small groups playing acoustical instruments and occasional amplified keyboards.  Dooby’s has no plans for a DJ, bands, or dancing in the future.  The live entertainment privilege can extend to Sugarvale as well.

The second hearing involves “The Room” where the applicant is requesting a transfer of a Class A license to be downgraded to a Class D license, beer and wine sales only.  There is not request for live entertainment.  At a recent general membership meeting, the owner, Andre Mazelin, presented his plans and those present overwhelmingly voted in favor to support the downgrade and transfer.
