General Meeting

Tuesday, September 19th, 7:30pm


Please join us tomorrow evening, Tuesday, September 19th at 7:30pm for our MVBA General Meeting held at The Belvedere at 1 East Chase Street. We will be discussing the upcoming MVBA November elections as well as issues in the community surrounding the homeless. 

This month, our special guest will be InvestEd, who will talk about the financial services that they offer. InvestEd is a Baltimore based, Maryland Registered Investment Advisory firm offering fiduciary, fee only investment advising and financial planning.

Chase Brexton Health Care, one of our new MVBA Business Members, will be joining us to talk about the health services that they offer at our October general meeting, instead of at this month's meeting as originally planned.  

As always, our general meetings are free and open to the public, members and non-members alike. Please join us to discuss important issues and events related to our Mount Vernon community.



Upcoming MVBA November Elections


With the November 21st MVBA Board Elections soon approaching, we are currently accepting nominations for serving on the MVBA Board. The following seven (7) board positions are up for election:

President (serving 2-year term) 
Michele Richter, Current President

The President shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the Association.

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • The President shall preside at all Board and General Membership meetings of the Association.
  • The President shall have general management and direction of the activities of the Association and all powers ordinarily by the President of an organization.
  • The President shall prepare the agenda for all meetings of Directors and the general membership, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors and shall call special meetings of the members and directors, consistent with the By-Laws.
  • The President shall sign all contracts and agreements in the name of the Association following a Resolution of the Board of Directors.
  • The President shall sign all notices, checks, drafts, warrants, or other orders for the payment of money which are drawn, and also signed by the Treasurer.
  • The President shall serve as the representative of the Association at meetings and in discussions with public and private agencies, unless the Directors authorize a special committee or individual to represent the Association.
  • The President shall have such other powers and duties as may, from time to time, be assigned by the Board of Directors.

Time Commitment for Position:  
30+ hours per week


Vice President (serving 2-year term)
Matthew Muir, Current Vice President

The Vice President shall, in the absence of the President, perform all duties and have all the powers of the President.

Additional Responsibilities include:
  • The Vice President shall also have such additional powers and duties as may be assigned by the President or the Board of Directors.
Time Commitment for Position:  

20+ hours per week


Treasurer (serving 2-year term)
Onahlea Shimunek, Current Treasurer

The Treasurer shall be responsible for all funds in the name of the Association and shall deposit all funds in a bank designated by the Board of Directors.

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • The Treasurer shall have major responsibility for the collection of dues each year and shall bring to each meeting of the Association, an up-to-date record of all paid and unpaid members.
  • Unless specifically waived, the Treasurer shall make a report to the membership at each Association meeting of the financial condition of the Association.
  • The Treasurer shall also prepare and submit to the Board a budget at the start of each year, projecting income and expenditures, which budget shall be adopted or amended.
  • The Treasurer shall prepare an annual report of the income and expenses and submit same to the Board of Directors.
Time Commitment for Position:
15+ hours per week


Recording Secretary (serving 2-year term)
Christine Griffin, Current Recording Secretary

The Recording Secretary shall keep accurate records of all Board and Membership meetings of the Association.

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • The Recording Secretary shall keep a record of those members who attend each meeting.
  • In the event of a vote challenge, it shall be the responsibility of the Recording Secretary to ascertain from a review of the membership rolls and membership cards whether an individual is entitled to vote. 
  • Unless waived, the minutes of the preceding Board and Membership meetings shall be read at each Membership meeting of the Association and submitted to the membership for their approval or amendment.

Time Commitment for Position:  
15+ hours per week


Corresponding Secretary (serving 2-year term)          
Vicky Aloneftis,
Current Corresponding Secretary

The Corresponding Secretary shall prepare and send notices and answer any and all correspondence at the direction of the President and prepare for the President's signature official statements of the Association's position on various issues which need to be communicated to the proper agencies, authorities, organizations, or individuals. Such correspondence shall be made available, upon request, for inspection by any member.

Time Commitment for Position:  
15+ hours per week


Director (2 positions serving 3-year term)
Julie Canard & Lance Decker, Current Directors

The purpose and function of the Board of Directors of the Association shall be to provide advice and consent to the President in the day-to-day management of the Association’s affairs.

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • Meeting and acting as a board to adopt such rules and regulations for the conduct of meetings and management of the Association as are deemed proper, not inconsistent with the Articles of Incorporation and By-laws of the Association.
  • Participate in the planning of the meetings of the Association and to prepare recommendations for the membership. 
  • Approve the expenditures funds by the officers of the Association and to adopt a budget for the Association each year; 
  • Receive an annual statement of income and expense and provide for its audit; 
  • Act on behalf of the issue(s) at a general meeting of the full membership.
  • Executive such additional duties as may be required by the By-laws, as amended from time to time.

Time Commitment for Position: 
10+ hours per week


In addition to the responsibilities listed above, all board members are expected to act as a Chair/Co-Chair of a MVBA Committee.

nominations@mvba.org, and the Committee will schedule an interview with you.

All potential candidates on the Board's slate must be picked before the October General Meeting, taking place on Tuesday, October 17th, as all candidate bios must be placed in the October MVBA Newsletter. If you are a candidate, you will be given a few minutes to speak and present yourself to the audience on October 17th.

As mentioned earlier, the election will take place at our November General Meeting on Tuesday, November 21st.



Renewing Your MVBA Membership & Updating Your Membership Information

Please ensure that you’ve renewed your MVBA membership before the October General Meeting on Tuesday, October 17th. It’s important to note that in order to vote in the upcoming elections, your membership will need to be current. This information will be confirmed when you receive your ballot for voting.

Update to the Mount Vernon Children's Park


MVBA continues to spruce up the Children's Park on Calvert & Madison Streets with additional landscaping. Details can be found on mountvernonchildrenspark.org. If you would like to donate to the park, Click Here.

Residential Parking Permit (RPP) - Area 28

RPP time is here. Area 28 permits will expire on September 30th. Annual registration renewal began on August 20th.

Hotel Indigo is graciously hosting the RPP permit pickup again this year. Hotel Indigo is located at 24 W. Franklin St. (corner of Franklin & Cathedral Streets). Be sure to have your ID (driver's license) and vehicle registration when coming to pickup your new permit. You can pickup your renewed permits on any one of the following dates:

Today — Monday, September 18th, 5:30pm 8pm
Wednesday, September 20th, 5:30pm 8pm

Note that only permits that have been renewed and paid for in advance can be picked up at one of the pickup dates.

Planters Update:
First planter completed & more to come!

This weekend, we planted the first of our seasonal planters. Over the next couple of weeks, you will notice more planters popping up around the neighborhood. These planters are being installed and planted compliments of the MVBA Trees & Greening Committee as well as the MVBA Clean & Beautiful Committee. These planters will be maintained year-round with seasonal plantings.

If you are interested in donating to the beautification of our streets, please visit  mvba.org/Donations and specify "Other" and add a comment that the donation is for "Planters."

First Fall Volunteer Tree Planting
Saturday, September 23rd, 9am-1pm

Join us for our first planting event of the Fall!  Meeting location to be announced later, but gather afterwards for free pizza for volunteers at Iggie's (818 N. Calvert Street).

This is a rain-or-shine event, so please dress for the weather.  Wear closed-toe shoes and bring work gloves in you have them. We recommend bringing a water bottle.

Thursday, September 21st, 6-8pm

Join us for our monthly Third Thursday Happy Hour event coming up this Thursday, September 21st, 6-8pm at Café Filí at 816 Cathedral Street. Stop by and welcome them to the neighborhood. See you there!

MVBA continues to welcome all local Business Owners to our next quarterly Business Round Table this Fall on Wednesday, October 11th from 9-11am located at 12 W. Madison Street (corner of Madison & Morton Streets). 



Coming Up in October

  • MVBA General Meeting is Tuesday, October 17th.
     
  • Chase Brexton Health Care will join us at the October General Meeting on October 17th.

  • Candidates for the MVBA Board Election will be introduced and have an opportunity to speak at the October General Meeting on October 17th. 

  • New MVBA branding and website will be presented. 

  • Mount Vernon's first annual Oktoberfest will be held on October 13th and 14th. Location and other details will be announced in a special news blast and on social media.

  • Third Thursday on October 19th at TBD location.

  • ProjectSPACE is scheduled to arrive in Mount Vernon in mid-October. More details will follow.
