In addition to the new routes that are being proposed, there will be a bus-only lane traveling on Charles Street between Madison and Oliver Streets as well St. Paul Street between Monument and Redwood Streets. These proposed traffic modifications are scheduled to begin August 21st and September 25th respectively. These changes will impact many businesses and residents in the community. So please be sure to use this opportunity to voice concerns and thoughts.  You can read more about these new bus-only lanes at

Ceremony Commemorating
100th Anniversary of Lafayette Statue
Tuesday, May 16th, 5-6pm

Join the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy and numerous dignitaries in the South Square the evening of May 16th for a ceremony commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Groundbreaking for the impressive statue of Lafayette in Mount Vernon Place.

Giant French and American flags raised on Baltimore City Fire Department trucks will adorn the space, and Mayor Catherine Pugh, Consul General Michel Charbonnier of the French Embassy, and Col. Robert Dalessandro, the Chairman of the National World War I Centennial Commission, and others, will speak.

Music will be provided by a brass quintet from The Maryland Defense Force Band MDDF BAND, who will perform the American and French national anthems, and after a wreath is presented, both Taps and Aux Morts.
100 years ago, shortly after the United States entered World War I, a delegation of French dignitaries visited Washington DC to coordinate with American leadership on the war effort. As a symbol of the important friendship between the two nations, the delegation then visited Baltimore to break ground for Mount Vernon Place's new statue of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French military officer who became a hero in the American Revolution.

After the groundbreaking in the East Square, it was thought that Lafayette deserved a more prominent place in Mount Vernon Place. As plans progressed, the statue's site was moved to the South Square, where everyone traveling north on Charles Street would see it silhouetted against the Washington Monument. Carrère & Hastings were hired to redesign all the squares in Mount Vernon Place in the popular City Beautiful style - which is what we see today! The Lafayette statue was dedicated in 1924.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the Engineers Clubs on West Mount Vernon Place.
